Exception Lanes That Survive a Shift Change

Designing exception lanes so evening clerks inherit a usable picture instead of a pile of half-updated notes.

Clipboard and status cards arranged in lanes on a dispatch table

Shift change is where many Thai delivery desks lose the thread. Morning clerks close some late windows; evening staff inherit sticky notes that no longer match the vans still on the road.

We favour three exception lanes that stay visible across both shifts: reattempt today, hold for customer contact, and escalate to depot. Each card carries the stop ID, last known location, and the next action owner — not a novel of commentary.

Colour helps only when it maps to action. Soft neutrals for waiting, a single strong mark for escalate. Too many hues and the board becomes decoration.

During status board workshops we practice a five-minute handover aloud: the outgoing clerk walks the three lanes, names open escalations, and leaves. The incoming clerk does not dig through chat history first.
